Earlier today, on 24 April 2019, the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) gave its input into the City of Cape Town’s 2019/2020 Draft Budget through the appropriate channels. Given the import and scope of our submission we also sent it directly to all councillors in the City of Cape Town.
The substantive submission (that can be accessed here) addresses the following issues:
-
The ongoing provision of undignified temporary sanitation services and the lack of infrastructure investment in informal settlements,
-
The uncertainty around, and the mismanagement of, the janitorial service for communal full-flush toilets in informal settlements,
-
The lack of clarity on how many taps/standpipes/water service points the City of Cape Town plans to deliver to informal settlements in 2019/2020,
-
The lack of any discernible plan or even an honest commitment on how the current distribution of public lighting across the City, which discriminates against poor and working-class Black and coloured communities, will be addressed,
-
The lack of any discernible plan, informed by evidence and data, for where CCTV cameras should be installed in the City,
-
The irrational deployment of law enforcement resources, and,
-
The use of ward allocations to detract from the City’s inequitable or non-delivery of services.
