On Wednesday, 27 May 2015 the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) will march to Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille’s Office to demand that the Mayor tables an equitable budget when she delivers her final budget speech on Friday 29 May 2015.
The City of Cape Town has allocated only R22 million (1.72%) of the water and sanitation capital budget for all of Cape Town’s 204 informal settlements in 2015/16 and decreasing to R19 million (1.21%) in 2016/17.
We will be marching displaying all the names of the 204 informal settlements to demand that the Mayor tables a budget for dignity, equality and the progressive realisation of the rights to water and sanitation.
In April, the SJC and NU made a joint submission and facilitated over 500 submissions from informal settlement residents on the lack of water and sanitation infrastructure in informal settlements.
It is up to the Mayor to apply her mind to the submissions – and act.
The SJC/NU submission together with an infographic can be accessed here: http://nu.org.za/budgetsubmission/
