Social Justice Coalition (SJC) members joined the Congress of South African Trade Union’s (COSATU) protest in the Cape Town city centre today. The protest – attended by various union movements and civil society organisations – called on government to address a number of issues facing poor and working class people in South Africa. These include fair labour standards, inadequate access to basic services and the violation of the constitutional rights of millions of people on a daily basis. The SJC campaigns for safety and security in all communities but particularly those worst affected living in townships, and this too was a significant focus of the protest action. We joined today’s march to draw attention to our own campaigns, but also to lend our support to the struggles of others against rising inequality, and uncountable and unresponsive governance. COSATU is an active partner organisation in the SJC campaigns for access to clean and safe sanitation facilities and improved access to courts and policing, and we are proud to stand besides them today in demanding the prioritization of the needs of our country’s poor and working class citizens.
