READ MORE ABOUT THE STORY OF OUR WORK OVER THIS YEAR
This past Saturday 4 July 2015, the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) held its 7th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Site C New Hall in Khayelitsha. Three hundred delegates representing all of our branches along with several partner organisations, came together to discuss, debate, celebrate, and plan for the coming year.
At the AGM, we presented our annual report, which tells the story of the work of the SJC. It was a challenging, but important year for us. It was the year the groundbreaking Commission of Inquiry into Policing in Khayelitsha went ahead; social audits, sanitation, and budget work began to shift the terrain of democratic participation in our communities; advocacy on the Gatherings Act and urban land justice began; and branches grew and strengthened. You can read more about how this all happened here: SJC Annual Report 2014-2015
For two weeks prior to the AGM, SJC members participated in Commissions that deliberated on and discussed our campaigns, setting priorities for the year. In 2015, there were four commissions: sanitation and budgets, safety and justice, urban land justice and branch development. At the AGM, branch members presented the Commission reports and ultimately the AGM adopted the priorities set through the commissions.
Every two years, the SJC elects a new Secretariat. This year, we were assisted by an independent election monitor through the Equal Education Law Centre and the branch delegates voted for the leadership.
The SJC is proud to announce the Secretariat for 2015 – 2017:
General Secretary: Ms Phumeza Mlungwana
Deputy General Secretary: Mr Dustin Kramer
Chairperson: Mr Nkosikhona Swaartbooi
Deputy-Chairperson: Ms Zimkita Booi
Treasurer: Mr Andrew Ardington
The General Secretary is the political head of the organization and her office will coordinate the SJC’s work over the next two years. In the coming months the Executive Council will appoint up to three people to join the Secretariat as co-opted members.
We would like to thank all of our supporters for standing with us in the struggle for safety, dignity, and equality.
