SJC Programme’s Manager Vacancy 2022
I. Job Purpose
Founded on 16 June 2008, the Social Justice Coalition (SJC) is a democratic, mass-based social
movement that campaigns for the advancement of the constitutional rights to life, dignity, equality,
freedom, and safety for all people, but especially those living in informal settlements across South
Africa. The work of the SJC is done across three focus areas Movement Building, Local Government
and Policing and Criminal Justice. The SJC seeks to appoint a Programme’s Manager (PM) who will be
reporting to the General Manager. It is expected that the PM position will be filled by 1 June 2022 or
soon thereafter.
II. Overview of the position
To provide strategic leadership, programme integration and representation, in line with SJC’s strategy.The role will also oversee the Programme Team (researchers and advocacy officers) and work closely with SJC’s stakeholders. Participate as a Management Committee (MANCO) member, working across functional teams to contribute to SJC’s overall effectiveness and contribute to its impact through participating in various forums, platforms and initiatives.
III. Lead program development and delivery
- Ensure the delivery of a program with demonstrable impact and is accountable for overall
programme quality and learning - Develop, implement and embed, a knowledge management system, that will ensure the sharing
of knowledge across the program, in informal settlements - Oversee the development of program and project improvement plans, to ensure effective and
timely implementation of the projects and program - Ensures that all individuals’ rights are protected in all of SJC’s work
- Working closely with the Director and General Manager to identify opportunities for funding to
ensure the financial sustainability of the SJC’s programmes - Direct and coordinate external program engagement
- Oversee the partner portfolio, with specific reference to the identification of strategic partners, and building and maintaining these relationships
- Building and developing an approach to program quality, knowledge production and dissemination
- Developing learning and knowledge management on programs and encouraging innovation across the organisation
- Ensuring good levels of affiliate engagement in programming through meeting affiliates’ needs in donor reporting, communications and making use of affiliate knowledge and subject expertise
- Managing and developing SJC’s Institutional funding strategy including significantly increasing income from new donors
- Leading, embedding and using Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning and social accountability work
IV. Skills, Experience & Knowledge
1. Skills
- Strong strategic leadership and managerial skills to co-ordinate the SJC’s research and
advocacy team to deliver on SJC’s strategic objectives - Ability to coach on the building of strong, credible relationships with local and international
local NGOs, movements and networks, government associations, business leaders and
other relevant stakeholders - Excellent communication skills, in written and verbal (English and Isixhosa (advantageous),
highly impactful influencing and persuasion skills. - Ability to adjust to constantly changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and
follow-through - Strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills; able to understand complex issues and
translate them into simple, workable actions and plans - Ability to think strategically, work creatively, effectively and in an innovative manner
- Excellent report-writing skills
- Commitment to SJC’s overall aims and policies and experience of promoting women’s
rights and those of marginalised people in all aspects of the organisation’s work
2. Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience of research, development programs, advocacy,
campaigning and movement building - Knowledge of capacity building, learning and development activities and how to create a
learning and sharing environment with a strong knowledge management philosophy - Politically astute, with a good understanding of key external organisations, how they operate
and make decisions, and the country development context - Commitment to and knowledge of creating a partner-led operational environment, with an ability
to create an internal approach that is focused on developing and supporting partner
organisations to achieve direct impact and results relating to the SJC’s objectives - Knowledge of, and experience in working with donors
3. Experience &Qualifications
- Influencing experience and ability to develop networks and build alliances
- A degree in social sciences, law, politics or development studies or related disciplines (Post
Graduate qualification will be advantageous) - 5 or more years of progressive management experience in a development or voluntary sector
organisation - Managing a complex influencing framework incorporating research, development programming,
campaigning and advocacy, movement building and other interventions
The SJC offers a competitive salary, which is based on the successful candidate’s qualifications and
experience. This is a 12- month fixed term contract renewable based on funding. The SJC is committed
