On Saturday, 5 October, the SJC will be hosting a public hearing on the outcomes of our second social audit – currently underway – investigating the provision of refuse collection and area cleaning by private contractors to Khayelitsha’s informal settlements.
(To read our first social audit report that investigated chemical toilets please see here: SJC Report of the Khayelitsha ‘Mshengu’ Toilet Social Audit)
The social audit is a mechanism that enables the participation of communities in the monitoring of services and contributes to ensuring that leaders are held accountable for government expenditure and service provision.
At the hearing, participants of the social audit will present their findings publicly. Community members will give testimony of their own experiences in relation to this service and the consequences faced where provision is inadequate. Representatives of government and the private companies will be given the opportunity to respond, and an independent panel will observe the proceedings.
Date and Time: Saturday, 5 October 2013, 10h00 – 15h00
Venue: Corner Jeff Masemola (Lansdowne Road) and Bonga Drive, Khayelitsha
(Please note: the venue is an outdoor marquee, which will signposted by the SJC. It is not the first marquee on Lansdowne Road, currently holding a church. Parking is available at the venue).
